Todays lesson is on Sentence Connectors.

(a) Phrasal connectors: To sum up, to summarise, in total, to conclude, in conclusion of ইত্যাদি। এই connector-গুলো সাধারণত কোন noun/pronoun-এর পূর্বে বসে। যথাঃ

To sum up the whole passage, she played a trick. (‘সারসংক্ষেপ করতে’)

It was very difficult to summarise the whole story. (‘সারমর্ম করাটা’)

He gave me in total 550 taka. (‘সর্বমোট’)

To conclude the essay, I will emphasise the morality of people. (‘পরিসমাপ্তি টানতে’)

He has written only two sentences in conclusion of the whole story. (‘উপসংহারে’)

(b) Clausal connectors: In brief, in short, to sum up, to summarise, on the whole, above all, in all, in total, to conclude, in conclusion ইত্যাদি। এই connector-গুলোর বেশিরভাগই বাক্যের শুরুতে কিংবা শেষে বসে। যথাঃ

He helps the poor. He is kind to others. In brief, he is a good man. (‘সংক্ষেপে’ বা ‘এক কথায়’)

She was meritorious, active and sincere. In short, she was brilliant. (‘সংক্ষেপে বলতে’)

He visited London, Paris and Stockholm. To sum up, it was a nice trip. (‘সারসংক্ষেপ বলতে’)

To summarise, she has quoted this line. (‘সারমর্ম করতে’)

Mr. Jahid is helpful. He is also sympathetic. On the whole, he is a good man. (‘সর্বোপরি’)

He is a famous player. His behaviour is good. Above all, he is a gentle man. (‘মোটের উপর’)

There are thirty male and twenty female members. In all, there are fifty members.(‘সর্বমোট’)

There live two men and three women in this room. There are five people in total. (‘সর্বমোট’)

To conclude, he always takes five minutes. (‘উপসংহারে’ বা ‘পরিসমাপ্তি টানতে’)

In conclusion she has written nothing. (‘উপসংহারে’)
