Mustafizur Rahman, the left-arm paceman, underwent surgery on his left shoulder on Thursday (August 11) at the BUPA Cromwell Hospital in London.
The operation was performed by Dr Andrew Wallace, the renowned shoulder surgeon, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said in a release. But officials said the bowling sensation will remain off the pitch for at least four months.
Dr Debashis Chowdhury, the BCB’s senior physician who had travelled to London to be with the young fast bowler, said, “The procedure began around 16h00 local time (22h00 BST) and took about an hour to finish. The type two SLAP tear of his left shoulder has been repaired. Mustafiz could be released from hospital tomorrow (Friday) and we will get a clearer idea about the follow up and rehab over the next couple of days.”
Mustafizur was diagnosed with a tear in his shoulder while playing for Sussex in the English season. He sustained the injury towards the end of July after playing two matches in the NatWest T20 competition.
An initial MRI had detected a superior labrum anterior to posterior tear in the shoulder. Mustafizur’s stint with Sussex had been delayed twice over concerns he may be burnt out and due to visa complications.
He finally joined the county side on July 21, making an instant impact with 4 for 23 against Essex in his debut match in the NatWest T20 Blast. However, he went wicketless against Surrey in his second match.
Mustafizur has had a troubled year injury-wise, missing the Asia Cup T20 tournament at home as well as a majority of the World T20 in India through injury. He played an influential part in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s march to the Indian Premier League title in April-May, though he did miss Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Lions with a hamstring strain.
